I am a former pro cyclist, author and lover of cookies and bikes! You can now book a ride with me here on VeloGuide. Since I want to make sure your ride is completely custom, please fill out the form below and a VeloGuide Pro Concierge will get the process started.
In my years as a pro cyclist, when I mentioned that I lived in Los Angeles, people would ask how I could train in a town known only for traffic and movie stars, but pro teams have held training camps in Malibu for years, and here's your chance to find out why. Next time you are in the LA area, join me for an amazing ride!
My rides start at $500 with special discounts for groups. Contact VeloGuide's tour concierge for more details.
Filmmakers used to try to sit near Orson Wells at restaurants to eavesdrop on his ideas. Phil Gaimon is the Orson Wells of cycling. His brain is a fountain of creative ideas and recommendations, and everyone wants to be near him and listen into his ideas on cycling routes, training, racing, touring and nutrition. He’s also a super nice guy who’s totally approachable and knowledgeable about local roads, coffeehouses and restaurants. I can’t wait to ride with Phil again.
Phil plans and executes probably the greatest road cycling event in all of Southern California every year. Not only does he know every climb like the back of his hand, he's still the fastest person up most of them, despite being "retired". Of course, you should take any chance you get to let him show you around. He's a nice guy and easy to talk to. During his VeloGuide VIP Ride before his Fondo, I learned he's got a particularly interesting guide skill: he knows all the celebrity houses and estates. Skip the lame star tour vans that are everywhere in the Hollywood Hills and get the real scoop from Phil while you struggle to catch your breath :)
Phil took us on a ride before his cookie Fondo it was a great warm up and we had a fantastic time!
Phil took Chris and I on a great tour around Malibu. He is a great guide and flat tire hero! He insisted on changing Chris' flat, even though Chris is a former mechanic, and did it in no time.
He showed us a couple places to get water up in the mountains which is a lifesaver for us Northerners. This will come in handy as we are already planning our next trip to the LA area!
Thanks Phil and VeloGuide :)

Great route, conversation and time spent with Phil. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting the LA area.
I was my privilege to ride with Phil. Always entertaining and friendly (he only bites cookies).
If you don't like bicycles, don't ride with Phil. For everyone else, you won't find a better guide.
If you're an avid cycling fan, or you can go fast uphill, you should pick Phil. He'd be a good guide for a beginner, but it's the cyclist who really loves his or her bike that will get the most from it. I mean, he is a former pro after all. He has seen pro cycling up close. It makes for good chat.
I came down to California for training (I race and this was early season training/dropping Canadian winter weight). Phil knows the areas well and took me up a fun climb. He'll easily be able to match your goals for the day.
And if you want to ride fast/hard? Perfect. Because you won't be able to drop him. In fact, you should definitely climb with him, he's a quiet ninja.
Nice guy, fast on a bike, knows the area, former pro. And the riding area he chose was stunning. Pretty easy choice IMO.
I had the opportunity to ride with Phil during a short visit to LA over the NYE weekend and I had a fantastic time. Not only did we take in some of the famous canyon climbs around the Hollywood hills, we also had great conversations about life, cycling, careers and everything in between! I highly recommend Phil for a good time in LA - on and off the bike! On a side note, the bike rental VeloGuide hooked me up with through I. Martin in Beverly Hills was also superb. Thanks for that.
My wife Sarah and I had the pleasure to ride with Phil in Bucerias this past Christmas. We had a blast. In addition to a great and challenging ride over some interesting terrain, there were many laughs, great conversation, plenty of stories and some awesome enchiladas and beers at the end. We hope to make our way to the Hollywood hills soon to join Phil for a ride in his backyard...and hopefully partake in some post ride Belgian Pecan cookies at Sweetsalt.
It is a pretty cool job to be able to travel around the world and ride in cool and exciting places as well as meet and ride with interesting local VeloGuides.. I have ridden with Phil twice now. Once out of Santa Monica and then a climb of Topanga.... whoa! Great ride and includes cookies, pizza and beer at one of Phil's favourite spots. Looking forward to riding with Phil again this December but I will be his VeloGuide in Bucerias Mexico!
I like rides with climbs, cookies, and quality people. I have an intimate knowledge of Hollywood, Los Angeles, Malibu, and Thousand Oaks.
I also love the routes of Phil’s Fondo! This is where I have chosen to show off the great climbs, ocean air, and perfect weather, to help Los Angeles get the reputation it deserves as a world-class cycling destination. I have personally designed the courses myself, collected rider gifts from my favorite sponsors, and thanks to our fundraising partners, Chef’s Cycle and No Kid Hungry, we’ll have celebrity chefs and Michelin stars providing lunch at the expo Saturday, post-ride dinner Sunday, and gourmet cookies all weekend. This is an LA food experience that would be worth the price of registration by itself.
