Meet Matthew

Brevard, United States of America

Cycling has been both my passion and my profession for most of my adult life. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to race professionally for 7 years in the world's biggest races, riding everything from the European Classics, to America's top stage races, to multiple Grand Tours including the Tour de France. During my time as a professional, Brevard and the surrounding area served as my home training grounds. I moved here specifically because of the beauty and challenge of the local roads, in addition to the year-round mild weather and small-town charm. I transitioned out of professional cycling at the end of 2016 and turned my focus to coaching and guiding fellow athletes as a way of sharing my passion for the sport.

Please inquire by filling out the Custom Tour Request form, and VeloGuide will contact you about booking a date. Tell them how many hours you're looking to ride and I would love to show you my favorite roads at your pace! Post-ride coffee is always on me.  :)

WOW! I really had no idea how amazing the riding is in North Carolina. I mean I hear about the Blue Ridge Mountains but truly underestimated the beauty, the challenge and the diversity. I met Matt in Brevard which is a pretty cool little town. He hooked me up with a bike, a pre-ride coffee and we were on our way. Post ride we hit the Oscar Blues Brewery where we had a juicy burger from the food truck and a couple different brews on tap. Highly recommended.

My Favorite Ride

I have been blessed to be able to ride all over the world, but still believe I've found some of the best riding in the country here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Brevard is a true hidden gem and I'm very excited to share it with my fellow cycling enthusists!

The quintessential local ride is the ascent from Brevard up through Pisgah National Forest to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The climb out of the valley begins gradually as you enter the Pisgah National Forest through a tree lined scenic highway. After 12 miles of a rolling climb shadowing a gently flowing stream, the road turns up to an average gradient of 7% for the final 3.5 miles of twisting up to the Parkway. The reward for your effort is the Blue Ridge Parkway, arguably the most picturesque road in the country. Views abound from the Parkway regardless of the direction you choose and you always get a thrilling descent back into the valley. My favorite loop features a final stretch with expansive views of the mountains you just conquered along quiet country roads shadowing a meandering, trout filled stream. The complete loop will take most riders 4.5 - 5 hours, but a ride up and back can be done in 3 hours or less.

If the Parkway sounds too challenging, don't be intimidated! One of the best parts of the local area is the wide-range of riding options.  The valleys to the north and south of Brevard offer gently rolling roads with outstanding views of the surrounding mountains. Many of these roads follow the natural contours of meandering rivers and streams or lead to a nice viewpoint. If you feel up for some more moderate climbing, we can venture out to Sassafras Mountain, the highest point in South Carolina, and enjoy the view. Wherever we choose to ride the roads will be spectacular, so let's just go for an adventure!

If riding the dirt is more your style, we can head for Pisgah National Forest or Dupont State Recreational Forest, where hundreds of miles of trails await. Pisgah is known for its long climbs coupled with arm searing descents and technical terrain.  In Dupont State Recreational Forest, which is about a 15 minute drive from downtown Brevard, you will find another massive trail system consisting of a less technical, but equally beautiful mix of 4x4 roads and flowy single-track. This network offers some of the "Land of Waterfalls" most spectacular falls.

With miles to explore, we can plan an enjoyable afternoon no matter your skill or fitness level. I'm happy to ride road, mountain bike, or gravel; your choice! One of the greatest parts about riding around Brevard is that there is always something to ride to: a stunning viewpoint, a bakery rest-stop, or a swimming hole to jump in and cool down at the end of a long, hot ride. Tell me your desired ride and let me create a memorable day!
