I’ve lived and biked in Portland since 2007, and teach art classes at some of the local colleges when not spinning around town. I’ve also been cycling guide in the Portland area for a few years. Getting the chance to show people around the Willamette Valley, Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge has been great, but there is so much great riding right out of Portland where I tend to explore the most on my own or with friends.
The majority of the riding I like to do involves trying new backroads, trails and gravel with friends, along with the occasional MTB ride. There is a really great community of cyclocross racing in Oregon during the fall which I’ve been diving (or falling) head first into the last couple years, and enjoying the bit of competition.
There is a really nice variety of riding in and around Portland. Whether it’s a city ride on mainly bike paths, hilly road ride, or quick dirt rip thru forest park all rides can end well with the abundance of good coffee and great food here. It’s also easy on a clear day to get great views of the Cascades or Columbia Gorge after riding to the top of one of the many local butte-top parks. A longer road ride can also get you to the Columbia Gorge and Multnomah Falls (the tallest in the state). Leaving from downtown Portland, a lot of the best riding here climbs directly to the top of the west hills for lots of long rolling miles and good views of the Coast Range or Cascades.
