In the Shadow of the Rockies
The city of Canmore is nestled in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains near the southeast boundary of Banff National Park. Canmore is billed as one of the most cycle-friendly destinations in Canada for good reason. The internationally known Rocky Mountains are on Canmore’s doorstep, offering adventure and the thrill of the wild to cyclists of all ability levels. From the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail to the three (yes, three) Mountain Bike Skills Parks, Canmore is a world mecca for cyclists.
There are over 100 mountain bike trails totaling close to 500 kilometers in the hills above town, making this outdoor sports hub a cyclist’s dream. Even within the town of Canmore, you’ll find over 80 kilometers of multi-use trails and bike paths. There’s something for everyone, from the family on vacation seeking a refreshing outdoor outing, to the mountain biker looking for an exhilarating descent down a singletrack trail.
Bow River Valley
Featuring a network of trails right in town, the Bow River Valley offers cyclists an introduction to the natural beauty of the area. Particularly good for beginning level riders and families, some of these trails are paved, while others are gravel, and many follow the banks of the magnificent Bow River through town. There are many scenic points along the way for mountain views, and you may even see some wildlife, as it’s abundant in the region.
Figure 8 Loop
Taking in part of the Legacy Trail, this 26-kilometer ride to Banff takes you through awe-inspiring country. Past Banff, you’ll visit Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewanka, both nestled under the imposing east face of Cascade Mountain. You’re bound to see some local wildlife in the form of bighorn sheep and elk, both of which are often visible on the roads near the lakes.
At the Legacy Trailhead, and across from Travel Alberta’s Tourist Information Center, you’ll even find a set of tools to do any fine-tuning you may need prior to setting out, and a pump for your tires. How Canadian is that...eh?
